It is Better to Give Than Receive

With Christmas around the corner, a lot of attention is given to giving and receiving. We all love to receive a gift. It can make us feel loved and appreciated. As we mature though, we realize that it can be just as good if not better to give a gift.

In the Bible there is Scripture that supports this idea. In Proverbs 19:6, "Everyone is the friend of a man who gives gifts." And in Acts 20:35, "In everything I have pointed out to you [by example] that, by working diligently in this manner, we ought to assist the weak, being mindful of the words of the Lord Jesus, how He Himself said, It is more blessed (makes one happier and more to be envied) to give than to receive."

There are several ways to give. The most obvious are to give material gifts. bad credit home equity like to give Christian t-shirts, some like to give iPods or CD's. It really is a good feeling to open up a present form someone who cares about you. It is a great feeling to see others rejoice at a gift.

Another way to give is by deeds. Giving a Christmas deed may actually be good for your health. A US study found that older people who do not help others are more than twice as likely to die as people who give some help, reinforcing the notion that it really is better to give than receive. According to Stephanie Brown, a psychologist at the University of Michigan, "Making a contribution to the lives of other people may help extend our own lives."

But it is Jesus who has given us the ultimate gift and that is salvation. Let us not forget that what Christmas is all about. It is the celebration of the birth of the son of God, Jesus Christ. The give that Jesus gave us on the cross is the ultimate gift to all.
